This Baraboo Quartzite outcrop, named in honor of UW Prof. Charles R. Van Hise, renowned geologist, conservationist & President of UW, was used to demonstrate changes that occur in rocks during periods of mountain formation. His Baraboo Hills observations helped develop his groundbreaking concepts of structural/metamorphic geology. Later, the concepts were universally accepted as principles of structural geology. It's now the one most important locality to demonstrate these principles.
