The town of Porto Venere is located at the southern end of the peninsula, which, breaking away from the jagged coastline of the Riviera di Levante, goes to form the western shore of the Gulf of La Spezia or also called "Gulf of Poets". At the end of this peninsula are three small islands: the Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto; only the island of Palmaria, which lies directly opposite the village of Portovenere beyond a narrow stretch of sea, is a small inhabited.
