The castle is located on the wall of Mount Hohenzollern at an altitude of 855 meters, near Hechingen, in the Swabian Jura. The first part of the castle was built during the eleventh century and was completely destroyed in 1423 after a siege of 10 months of an alliance of the imperial cities of Swabia.
