The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum commemorates the explosion of the atomic bomb that devastated Nagasaki at 11:02 am on 9 August 1945. The first atomic bomb museum was built in 1955 to show the world the horror of the bombing and the need to eliminate nuclear weapons. The present museum was opened in 1996 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the bombing. The museum covers the history of the event as a story focusing on the attack and events leading up to it. It also covers the history of nuclear weapons development with photographs, relics and documents related to the atomic bombing.
