Inter-Ethnic Friendship

Story line: set in the 60's in America, during times of racial tension, a 12 year old caucasian boy befriends an elderly African-American field hand descended from slaves.

What I need is a strong conceptual image that represents the breaking of an interracial boundary. This is a literary work that delves deep into social issues and requires an image that is equally serious-minded.

I have included some inspirational images that reflect the mood and composition that i am looking for (moody, high contrast, very simple or no background) but I am leaving the subject matter up to creative interpretation.

Landscape will be accepted if the image is high enough resolution and can be cropped into portrait.
