Creative Statement

My artwork takes a personal view of social, political, and cultural issues that I deal with day to day as a photographer and an African American man. I often utilize candid techniques walking through urban neighborhoods, visiting corner stores, old abandoned buildings,
under bridges, and empty
playgrounds. I seek to document the culture that surrounds me and its effects, not just on me but the community around me. I try to preserve that culture to the best of my ability. My work varies from different styles of media from film to digital with also a mash-up of multimedia works. I seek what is unseen and what does not want to be seen in my community or across the world. I feel like it is my job to give an eye to those who need it. Most of my film work I develop and print myself, using darkroom techniques I developed over the years through school. I do not seek fame nor to brand myself, but to make a name for myself as a renowned photographer in the community I grew up in. I aspire to build trust, hope, and love within that community with the people I am documenting and how society has affected their lives, both negatively and positively.
